Executive & Professional Coach

I'm a physician, educator, and academic leader. For more than twenty years my work has kept returning to one question: what helps capable people move past competence toward careers that feel like their own?

As a Professor of Medicine at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, I've directed clinical programs, built educational initiatives, and advised and mentored hundreds of physicians through promotions, setbacks, and changes of direction. Coaching is the part of that work I've always found most useful, and the part I now do on purpose.

Meaningful change rarely requires reinvention. More often it starts with seeing a strength you already have more clearly.

I'm a Gallup-Certified CliftonStrengths Coach and am completing professional certification through the International Coaching Federation. My approach draws on both: start with what you do well, look honestly at what's getting in the way, and decide what to do next.

Richard Greene speaking to a group

Equity and inclusion have run through my work in academic medicine, and they shape how I coach. Leadership looks different depending on who is doing it and where they stand.

About two years ago I started practicing yoga, and it has changed how I coach more than I expected. On the mat, most of the work is noticing: where you're holding on harder than you need to, and when your attention has jumped ahead to what's next instead of staying with what's here. Coaching asks for the same kind of presence. When I'm with a client, I'm not planning my next question. I'm listening for what sits underneath the one they've just asked.

I work with established executives and with people earlier in their careers. Many are over-functioners: capable, relied-upon people who built their careers on carrying more than their share and are starting to feel the cost. What they have in common is a turning point, and the wish to handle it deliberately.
